If your company is building or deploying AI agents, the ones that book meetings, trigger API calls, write code, or make purchasing decisions without a human clicking "approve" each time, the federal government just started drawing the lines around what "secure" and "trustworthy" looks like for those systems.
On February 17, NIST's Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) launched the AI Agent Standards Initiative. It's the first federal effort specifically targeting autonomous AI agents, and it comes with two open comment periods that will shape the standards your vendors, customers, and auditors point to for years.
This isn't about chatbots or search tools. NIST drew a clear line: the initiative covers AI systems "capable of taking actions that affect external state," meaning persistent changes outside the AI system itself. If your AI agent can modify a database, send an email, execute a transaction, or change a configuration, you're in scope.
The 5-Point Checklist
1. Know what agents you're running.
Start with an inventory. Which AI tools in your org act autonomously? Customer support bots that escalate tickets, coding assistants that push commits, procurement tools that place orders. If you can't list them, you can't secure them. Your CTO or VP of Engineering should own this by end of Q1.
2. Audit your agents' access permissions.
NIST's RFI on AI agent security (docket NIST-2025-0035, comments due March 9) focuses heavily on least privilege and constrained environments. Ask: does each agent have only the permissions it needs? Can it access systems it shouldn't? Most companies will find their agents have broader access than any human employee would get, and that's exactly the risk NIST is flagging.
3. Map your human oversight gaps.
The RFI specifically asks about "human oversight controls" for consequential actions. That means approval gates before an agent sends a wire, modifies production code, or shares sensitive data externally. If your agents can do high-impact things without a human in the loop, build those checkpoints now. Don't wait for the standard to tell you to.
4. Plan for rollback.
NIST asks how organizations handle "undoes, rollbacks, and negations for unwanted action trajectories." In plain English: when your AI agent does something wrong, can you reverse it? This is an architecture question your engineering team needs to answer before it becomes an audit question.
5. Watch the two deadlines, and consider submitting comments.
The companies that shape these standards get to influence them. Two windows are open right now:
- March 9, 2026: Comments due on the RFI on AI Agent Security. This one focuses on secure deployment, prompt injection risks, and monitoring. - April 2, 2026: Comments due on NIST's AI Agent Identity and Authorization concept paper, which proposes extending OAuth 2.0 frameworks to AI agents. Submit via [email protected].
CAISI is also hosting sector-specific listening sessions starting in April (healthcare, finance, education). Express interest by March 20.
Why This Matters Now
These standards are voluntary today. But if you've been through SOC 2 audits, NIST framework assessments, or vendor security reviews, you know how "voluntary" guidelines become procurement requirements within 18 months. The Colorado AI Act already references NIST frameworks as a safe harbor. Getting ahead of this isn't optional for companies that sell to enterprises or operate in regulated industries.
